So yesterday I came across a journal about Twilight... which somehow brought me back to a conversation with an on-line friend, which somehow brought me back to a real life encounter, which somehow... whatever, that doesn’t matter.
No, this journal isn’t about Twilight. No. Get out. Now.
For those of you who are still here, let me get into the subject. Missconception about... about life? I dunno how else to describe it. We’re all part of fandoms no matter what. Some are more severe then others, granted.
You see, I came across a boy – no idea how old he was, so let’s just keep it to genitalia generalization plz! – who had it engraved in his mind that ALL GIRLS like Twilight. Why would he – and many others – think this? He was completely flabbergasted by the thought that I don’t like Twilight and I am not in love with Edward Cullen. In fact, I don’t think he believed me because he raved on about the upcoming movies anyways.
Upon talking to my best friend about this, she said it reminded me of the times when she met guys who were utterly convinced that the only girls who played tabletop games like D&D and Werewolf were fat and ugly. I’m not fat and I’m certainly not ugly. She’s not fat and definitely not ugly. In fact, I know plenty of pretty girls who play tabletop games. Where in hell did this missconception come from? I’ve heard it too, sadly from a new player in our Werewolf games too. Never heard of girls playing these games at all. I guess it explains why whenever I go in a comic book shoppe without going into the manga section, or whenever I go into tabletop rpg specialized shops all the guys look at me with wide 2 dollar eyes and a little tent... which I’d rather not talk about. *shudders* But I can talk about the wide eyes. Why is it so strange? It’s true there are less girls who play these games, but... it’s really not THAT bad, geez.
And the same goes for video games and other fanchises! “You play Mortal Kombat!?” “You played Mass Effect?!” “You like Resident Evil?!” “You like Transformers!??!” “You liked Transformers BEFORE the movies and before the cuteness that is Bumblebee???!!!” Just add some corny love music and some wind in our hairs and they’ve found love.
Why is it so strange? Why can’t I hate Twilight and enjoy playing a male character in a tabletop game (without being fat, ugly and a closet lesbian for playing a hot guy?... because... well... yeah Adrian’s hot... BUT THAT’S BESIDE THE POINT!) and enjoy Xbox/PS3 games that don’t require me to play a 3D version of Tetris (because girls only play Tetris duuuurrr)!
Anyways... What are your thoughts on the subject? Any other general missconceptions you’d like to share?
Quick edit: I just wanted to make sure people knew I don't mean this as only boys have missconceptions about girls. Those are the missconceptions I encounter the most lately so they're merely examples
It's not an affront against boys here, far from it.
